Putting the V.P.s in perspective

With both the Democratic and Republican national conventions behind us, we can finally take a real look at vice-presidential nominees Joe Biden (D-Delaware) and Sarah Palin (R-Alaska). Wait, what? Sarah?

That’s right. John McCain went out and got himself what a lot of Democrats wanted as their presidential nominee: a woman. As Rudy Giuliani said during the Republican National Convention, “Let’s shake up the White House.” Well, Giuliani can rest assured for no matter which party wins this elections, in the end, the White House will be home to either the first African-American President or the first female Vice-President.

Photography room suffers equipment theft

Computers, cameras, and other photography equipment were stolen on campus during the second weekend of school.

The funds for this equipment had been “accumulated over six years through grant writing, fundraising by photo club, and private donations,” photography teacher Allison Stewart said. More supplies had been purchased just last year with the aid of the Governor’s Grant. (more…)

Student population reaches record low

Though the hallways may feel more crowded, overall the student enrollment for the 2008-09 school year has reached a record low.

In just the last year, enrollment dropped from 2,170 to the current enrollment of 2,050 students. Over the past decade, enrollments has dropped by nearly 1,000 students. (more…)

The Glendale City Council plans to make the city healthier by amending a smoke-ban ordinance. Council members will vote on the matter on Sept. 30.

According to Section One of the ordinance, the purpose of the ban is to “protect the public [by ensuring] a cleaner and more hygienic environment for the city.” It also aims to “strike a balance between the needs of [smokers and] nonsmokers.” (more…)

After two years in existence, the administration decided to stop the “Writing Days” program.

Initially created to help improve students’ writing skills, the program became too constrictive for teachers. They requested more freedom in the manner by which they presented writing in their classes.

Every year, 400,000 people die of cancer related illnesses; a majority of these deaths are caused by lung and breast cancer. Imagine if all of these people had been aware of their various cases. If they were more prepared or more exposed to advanced medication.
