High hopes for next year

Last year, due to insufficient sign-ups, the golf team was terminated for the entire season. This year, however, two freshmen joined the team, making a total of five players. And so, the golf team was back in action, just a week before their first match of the season in March.
The game of golf is played by using different types of clubs to put a little white ball into either nine or eighteen holes. The player with the fewest number of strokes is declared the winner. As for team events, each player’s scores are added up to get the overall score of the team.
Even though the season is over, the golf team still practices at the Burbank Debell Golf Course every Sun., Wed., and Sat.
According to golf coach Vigen Jilizian, freshmen Alan Cho and Kevin Shim, considerably the team’s best players became California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) hopefuls but unfortunately did not qualify. Cho placed 10th and Shim tied for sixth.
“I missed CIF by six shots,” Shim said. “Only the top four continued on to CIF.”
Cho and Shim both found out about the golf team last semester whole enrolled in a basketball class taught by Jilizian.
Shim learned about golf only three years ago and immediately jumped at the chance to be on the school’s team.
Cho, however, had been playing golf since he was seven years old. He said that his father played golf and, that he started playing so that he would be able to “spend time with him.”
Thanks to these two players, the team set some school records. The past golf teams “probably only had one or two players as good as Kevin and me,” Cho said.
As for next season, the team is hoping to double its members. Cho and Shim are the only ones returning to the team since one of the players quit in the middle of the season and the other two might not return next year, according to Shim.
Cho said that they are looking for someone that can actually shoot a decent score.
“Golf is a team sport as well as an individual sport,” Jilizian said. “We are looking for members who have previous golf experience and interest in the sport; those who can compete in matches and can get around the golf course.”
