As of Nov. 19, Glendale Unified School District (GUSD) hired new security guards replacing former ones, Joyce Briscoe and Darush Arjang.
In early August security companies competed for the highest score in security rating. ESPY Security and Patrol Services Inc. won the highest rating. Therefore guards from that company were hired to work for the schools.
ESPY staff member Tyrain Eaton claims that there actually is no acronym for the company name, and that it comes from biblical times meaning to catch sight of.
Administrator of Business Services at GUSD Dr. Scott Price stated that this new contract with ESPY was “for the better.” Assistant principal Bill Sterling who was also part of the committee, concurred.
Newly hired security officer Amir Carthon was asked what he can bring to the school his response was “DISCIPLINE!”
ESPY claimed that being firm is not just being strict to the students, it is about having respect from and towards them.
“You never know what to expect, [New challenges] will happen everyday,” Carthon said.
Prior to working at the school, ESPY was employed by various venues such as offices and government buildings.
Security personnel Elizabeth Niebla said that she preferred working at Hoover over sitting in an office all day staring at a camera at her previous employment.
“I have a little boy and it’s nice to see some challenges he will face [in high school],” Niebla said.
Freshmen Edith Telmi and Lindy Yesayan feel school is safer with the new officers.
