Assistant Principal Lena Kortoshian will be leaving Hoover on June 29, accepting a position in Downey as a Math Consultant for the Los Angeles County Office of Education.
Kortoshian will be working in the Division of Curriculum and Instructional Services to aid schools in raising CST scores and providing staff development workshops.
“Being recruited for this position is a different challenge, and I need to move on,” Kortoshian said, adding that she will never forget the memories of her time here. “I have mixed feelings, because Hoover has been my family for eight years.”
Over the years, Kortohsian has worked with  departments and  parents to promote different educational activities and programs.
“I think the biggest gift she has given us is her concern for kids,” Assistant Principal William Sterling said.
Promoting non-violence and a friendly environment for students has been one of her highest priorities as assistant principal, among other prerogatives such as raising scores on CST’s and other major exams.
“She both has a soft touch when it comes to caring, and a hard touch when it comes to discipline,” Social Science teacher Daniel Kimber said.
Kortoshian will also be helping teachers with lesson planning, especially in the math department where, according to Welsh, she possesses her greatest expertise. From 1990 to 1999, she was a math teacher at Glendale High School.
Principal Kevin Welsh said, “Hoover will not be the same without Lena.”
