The wrath of controversy
Thursday May 17, 2007

By Staff Writer, Joe Welsh

Sexual content.  Foul language.  Mature themes.  All of these can be found in John Steinbeck’s classic novel The Grapes of Wrath.
It would make sense then that performing a staged version of this literary work at Hoover would be a risky undertaking.  After all, The Grapes of Wrath has caused controversy for years.
But surprisingly, that is exactly what is happening.  The drama department is putting on a production of the Steinbeck masterpiece next week. (more…)

Chew on this

From its name, Black Cow Café does not sound like an ordinary restaurant. Yet it is an outstanding classic café in Montrose, and it is just the right place for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, or just for small coffee breaks.
The service at Black Cow café is above average compared to other restaurants. The helpful servers will not hesitate in getting you just the right seat and recommend delicious meals as well. Once seated, the menu consists of varieties of food items from sandwiches to shrimp tempura.More...
At $10.95, the Black Cow cheeseburger is made with choice ground beef and served with lettuce, tomato, cheese, and mayonnaise on top of a sesame seed bun, and comes with a choice of either French fries or salad. Its large size is guaranteed to satisfy any starvation.
Pancho’s fish tacos is another dish that does not fail to please your taste buds. Served with rice, three bean chili and pico de gallo salsa, and made with tempura-fried Icelandic cod and nu-mex slaw on flour tortillas, it is the ideal Mexican meal priced at $9.95.
Tomato basil cappellini is made with sautéed garlic, tomatoes and fresh basil over angel hair pasta and served with either House or Caesar salad. At the cost of $9.95, its taste does not stand out particularly among other items on the menu, and should be avoided.
Blackened chicken and avocado sandwich was the least impressive meal of all. Made with chipotle mayonnaise, red onion, avocado, lettuce and tomato, its taste is mediocre and the French rolls used for buns are dry. Its price at $11.95 is a waste of money for such an unworthy meal.
For $4.95, both blackberry and peach cobblers are the perfect desserts for finishing up the whole course. Served with two scoops of vanilla ice cream, either cobblers taste delightful from the first bite to the last.
To enjoy the pleasant and comfortable interior atmosphere properly, avoid sitting outside. Even though there may be a long wait because of the high demand of indoor seats, it is worth it once you are inside. With old-fashioned decorations and brick walls, you would miss the inviting feeling of being in a traditional American café by sitting outside.

Also, due to the popularity of the restaurant, it is best to come early and hurry up with the ordering in case the desired meal runs out.

Boys’ tennis shows promise

In his hand, the athlete has a firm grip of the ball. The beads of sweat slowly run down his neck. He begins to bounce the ball and in the matter of a few seconds, he throws the ball slightly above his head, reaches back with his racket, and with all his might, serves the ball to the other side of the net anticipating a point.
The ball lands out of bounds. However, his opponent misses his shot.
“Out!” the opponent said.
“No, it wasn’t. You’re a liar.”
The two players laugh it off and continue practicing.
This humorous and laid back attitude is clearly evident when entering the tennis courts. (more…)
