Hoover received second place in this year’s Scholastic Bowl against Clark Magnet, Crescenta Valley (CV), and Glendale High Schools with CV winning the annual competition held last week at Glendale’s auditorium.
CV junior Rio Fischer said “they felt good since ruining Hoover’s chance at winning a fourth consecutive year was what we were aiming for.”
English teacher Bruce Galli, the Scholastic Bowl coach, said “they hoped to win, but there was no way of knowing how well-prepared the other teams would be.”
For winning second place, the Scholastic Bowl members ended up each receiving $125 scholarships.
According to Carrie Mills (’07) her only disappointment was answering a math question incorrectly.
They wrote a timed essay a week prior to the competition about censorship where the five members submitted their own essay and team member Christy Harutunian (’08) wrote a seven-page essay. Glendale High won the essay round giving them the lead but ended up being the third-runner up.
The final scores were CV at 81, Hoover at 75, Clark Magnet at 71, and Glendale at 66.
Frank Ilem (’07) said he was somewhat disappointed “because [CV] answered correctly before the question was asked completely.”
