“Carpe diem, quam minimum credula poster.” Seize the day, trusting as little as possible in the future.
The Latin Club will be traveling to Menlo High School in Atherton, California from Feb. 9 through Feb. 11 for the 52nd Annual California Junior Classical Legauge (CJCL) Convention.
The statewide convention, with “Carpe Diem” as its theme, will be housing between 35-50 schools.
The CJCL convention offers a wide array of events to attending students, such as Latin oratory, where students are graded on how well they can read and pronounce Latin, Olympika, a hosting game where physical activities such as tennis and swimming are played, and Impromptu Art, which engages teens by asking contestants to create a piece of art on the spot.
Three time CJCL attendee Michael Alchermes (’09) is looking forward not only to these events, but also to “staying up late and ordering pizza.” Students are allowed to pair up with roomies and enjoy their two-night stay in the Palomalto area.
Latin teacher Donald Ashman will be one of the hosting teachers. He enjoys the scenic bus ride to and from Menlo. “I love it! The fun never ends!” Ashman said.
Other miscellaneous and funky events include Mr. and Ms. CJCL and Rent-A-Roman. Mr. and Mrs. CJCL is similar to a prom king and queen, in which a male and female win in a competition based on their wit and personality on stage. Rent-a-Roman involves renting a “Roman servant” for the afternoon, where students receive a servant for the highest bidding.
Senior Joseph Ainsworth looks forward to all this and more, but mostly wishes to “see all [his] friends, from prior conventions.”
The convention ends with a big bang at the San Jose Convention Center with a fun-filled banquet and dance.
Latin teacher Linda Phillips, also attending the convention, states that the best thing any student can get out of it is when they make the transforming notion from “odd duck who speaks Latin” to “hey, well this is real [fun] after all!”
