The score is tied with one minute remaining.
The people in the stands grasp the edge of their seats. Hundreds of eyes remain widely open, carefully examining every second of the football game.
This could be the moment everyone is waiting for.
Suddenly, the offensive guard becomes a powerful force, moving left, right, then left again, using every muscle in his body to block the defensive linemen of the opposing team.
As sweat drips off his face, the audience looks in amazement. The offensive guard passes all his opponents, helping the other members of his team make yet another touchdown. The crowd goes crazy, screaming for joy.
This may be a dream to some, yet for offensive lineman Steve Herman (’07), this may be in his near future.
Herman stirred up his passion and dedication for football in junior high, where he was a part of the flag football team at Ribet Academy Middle School. However, it can be said that passion for football runs in his genes. His uncle, Gary Herman, while attending Kennedy High School, played against John Elway, a former football quarterback for the Denver Broncos, during his high school years.
As a sophomore, Herman made the “second team all-league,” which means other coaches from opposing teams nominated him for the position known as second best within the Pacific League. He hopes to soon surpass this accomplishment.
Cherishing all four years of being a part of the varsity football team, Herman states that high school football has “brought him many great memories.”
“Being the captain of the offensive line requires me to communicate and lead my teammates to make sure each person remembers their blocking assignment on each play,” he said.
While many players with his skill may have the tendency to become cocky, Herman maintains a mature and humble mindset, showing each player great respect and admiration. Varsity offensive lineman Menva Abelian (’07) regards Herman as “respectful” and always “willing to give a helping hand to anyone in need.”
Head coach Dennis Hughes believes his quickness, size, and technique is something he, [as a football coach], likes to have.
“There is no [greater] experience than being part of a football team,” Herman said.
