WASC Gives a Six

A six year accreditation, 19 accommodations, and the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) flag billowing in front of our school are the results of last year’s WASC accreditation.
“We are one of 60 schools [in California] that received a clear six year [accreditation],” Principal Kevin Welsh said joyfully at the Back to School assembly.
The abounding joy at receiving the highest accreditation possible was ubiquitously felt by the “shareholders” of Hoover. However, three recommendations were suggested - to apply more focus on career paths, merge the school and WASC action plan, and further integrate technology into the classroom setting.
“I am glad that we were accredited with six years because it shows colleges that our grades are meaningful,” said Narbeh Derafshkavan (’09).
WASC co-coordinator Sarah Kleinberg feels that the administration and faculty have responded appropriately to the recommendations. The new writing program is in “direct response to the WASC recommendations.”
In 2013, WASC will return to Hoover for another evaluation.
