Give him a racket, a ball, a court, and an opponent, and prepare to be blown away. He may not be a mini-Andre Agassi, but he sure has the same tennis mentality.
Sean Guerin (’09) has been playing tennis with the Hoover team for two years. A sophomore on the varsity team, Guerin is like no other. His love for tennis began even before he was in high school as he competed in individual tournaments last year.
Not only does Guerin play tennis throughout the year, but he also enjoys it during summer when he coaches the JV girls’ tennis team at La Cańada High School. The coach hired him for help and now he does it every summer. Coaching the girls helps Guerin in his own game, as he “notices things that [he] would not usually notice.”
Practice runs for two hours, sixth period and after school, five days a week. Besides the regular hours, Guerin also practices individually.
Preparations before a match include both mental and physical readiness.
“[Guerin is] consistent with hits [and is] overall a good player,” said Coach David Morelli.
Not only is Guerin a leading tennis player, but he is also a great guitar player. His band, Transit State, including Austin Estlee (’08), Rachel Ramas (’08), and Brenna Jordan (’08), has played in the Rock Show a number of times. Guerin has plans to join Jazz Band next year and pursue music in college.
“With everything he does, he does it with skill and determination,” said Estlee, cousin and fellow band member.
Whether it be playing tennis or the guitar, Guerin knows how to take matters into his own hands.
“Even now, he’s a leader of the team,” said Morelli. “[He is] the future of the team.”
