A season of spreading warmth

As winter draws near, those fortunate enough are able to go into their homes and stay warm. Those who do not have this luxury, however, can still receive warmth, thanks to the Young Men’s Christian Association (YMCA).
From Dec. to March 15 every year, the YMCA opens its Glendale Cold Weather Shelter to the homeless at the Glendale Armory located on 220 Colorado Street. People are given the opportunity to spend the cold days of winter inside, rather than out on the streets. On average, the shelter houses over 130 people and has a maximum capacity of 150 people.
According to the YMCA Winter Shelter adviser Tracy Fletcher, the YMCA only offers housing during winter, and not the entire year, because “the County of Los Angeles makes [extra] efforts to add emergency beds for the homeless [on colder days].” They mainly wish to prevent people from hyperthermia and other sicknesses that can be caused by the cold weather conditions.
Warmth, however, is not all the YMCA Winter Shelter has to offer to the less fortunate. They are provided with necessities such as showers and regular meals, and are offered case management help. The YMCA also cares for children and provides emergency health care for all people who seek the shelter.
Students interested in volunteering at the Winter Shelter only need to be over 16 years old. Volunteers can help by passing out blankets or preparing food for the needy.
The Winter Shelter is open to donations and will accept anything from hygiene necessities, such as shaving razors and deodorant, to basic clothing, such as socks. Those interested in donating can call Jenette at (818) 924-1295.
For more information, contact Tracy Fletcher at (818) 240- 4130, or visit her at the YMCA on 140 N. Louise Street.
