HHS Website resources gone to waste
Friday May 27, 2005
We live in a day and age when phone calls can be made to China from an isolated coast in the Caribbean 8,000 miles away and last for hours on end, without any sign of power loss; a time when one can access an infinite amount of resources with a few keystrokes.
Recently, our administration has decided to take a step into the modern era via a new addition onto its website (www.hooverhs.org): homework. Teachers have the option to post their assignments onto the website, meticulously categorized into corresponding departments: math, English, science (laboratory and social), foreign languages, arts, special education, and so forth. Each department is further divided into subsections for each individual class according to the title of the class and instructor. There is even a section for the athletic department so that P.E. teachers can make their students do laps through the Internet.
But some teachers, for reasons unknown, refuse to take advantage of this great new power handed to them. Out of the 94 English classes only 40 of them have posted up their homework. In the history department, only 20 of 68. However, the wonderful teachers in the mathematics department seem to prove more technologically efficient with a delightful record of 56 out of 82 classes that regularly post homework. There is certainly room for improvement, but much better than the science department with only 15 out of 67 classes.
In case there is a belief that students will neglect the website and that the new feature serves no purpose, rest assure that at least some will appreciate it.
“Sometimes I forget to write down the [homework] for chemistry, so it’s cool that I can just check the site for it,” said Deegant Adhvaryu (’06)
Whether it is skepticism or just outright laziness, neither are reasonable excuses to not use the new homework feature. In fact, there are numerous amounts of advantages to consider. One being that it removes (almost absolutely) the excuse, “I forgot the homework,” or “I was absent… I didn’t know about it,” both of which are heard over and over to the extent of becoming a slogan for slackers.
The Internet is not some fad that is going to go away after a few years. In the North American continent alone, 221million general computers access the web. There should be no reason to not be part of the hi-tech world, especially if it only requires a few minutes to do. Too many favorable aspects exist to ignore it.
